Letter to the Editor re: USGS Coalition
Jim Plasker, Executive Director, ASPRS
Page 33 of the April 2008 issue of the ACSM Bulletin includes a paragraph on the USGS Coalition. In that paragraph there is a statement, “ACSM is the only coalition member with a strong record in supporting the surveying and mapping activities of USGS.” While including the word “strong” makes this an opinion hard to debate, the following sentence which appears to support this statement is inaccurate. The sentence reads, “MAPPS has never been a member of the coalition, and ASPRS dropped out.” While I can’t speak for MAPPS, it is not true that ASPRS has “dropped out.” While we have not attended a meeting in several years, that is not unusual in my experience. Further, we continue to engage with the coalition on selected issues, have “signed on” to selected letters to Congress as appropriate, and have financially supported the Coalition’s outreach activities each time we were asked.
